Medical Support Assistants assigned to Nursing Services are responsible for performing a variety of administrative and clerical duties and is the liaison between the nursing staff in their assigned area and customers both internal and external to the medical center. There are two positions for Community Living Center (CLC) and 2 for Emergency Department.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM for Emergency Department. 12 hour shifts including weekends for the two positions in CLC Financial Disclosure Report: Not required

- Serves the receptionist for the nursing station with the ability to determine the nature of calls and answering questions of visitors to the ward.
- Respond appropriately and assure that all messages are communicated in a timely manner.
- Handles all patient information in accordance with provisions of the Privacy Act.
- Updates patient demographic, next of kin, emergency contacts utilizing pre-registration in VISTA.
- Accurately and timely processes patient information, admits, discharges, appointments and transfers in VISTA ADT menus and CPRS according to established training; processes all discharges, transfers to other VA facilities or to private hospitals.
- Verifies and completes text orders, notifying nursing staff of STAT and emergency orders.
- Accurately maintains and reviews patient's electronic medical record according to set procedures.
- Coordinates the release of information.
- Arranges and coordinates in-patient appointments for timeliness and to avoid conflicts in patient treatment.
- Able to retrieve existing documents in Vista Imaging; enters patient information in BMS and ensures that the BMS board is accurate.
- Assists with the orientation/on the job training of new staff.

Basic Requirements: * United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. * Experience and Education: (1) Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or (2) Education. One year above high school; or (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. * English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Grade Determinations: GS-05One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) or 4 years of education above high school. Specialized experience includes: scheduling appointments, interpreting and verifying provider orders, preparing for clinic visits, monitoring inpatient and outpatient appointments, completing encounter forms, and updating insurance information. In addition to meeting the specialized experience, candidates must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: 1. Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports. 2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. 3. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting. 4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work. 5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. 6. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-05.
Physical Requirements:Work is primarily sedentary but may include long periods of standing, sitting, and some walking and bending. Time will be spent at a computer terminal performing various keyboard functions. While work is not extremely physical in nature the incumbent will work under pressure with multiple tasks, changing priorities and stringent deadlines.
